Legionella Bacteria

A type of pneumonia can be lead to fatal due to the presence of bacteria present in large air conditioning plant of ships , building etc. How this bacteria breed and reason for its growth These bacteria basically breed in stagnant water or wet deposits of sludge and slime. Possible areas in the plant where they can be found Air inlet area below the cooler (stagnant water) In the Air filter In the humidifiers of water spray type In the damaged insulation Guidelines to the problem Sterilization is the technique used for cleaning these bacteria . 50 ppm super chlorinated solution is used as sterilization agent for the cleaning of the filters , drains of coolers , humifiers etc. Note Regular inspection should be carried out and sterilization should be done within three months of cooler. While humidifier of water spray type should be regularly cleaned . Knowledge Booster Disease due to bacteria are Pneumonia , Tuberculosis , Typhoid , Cholera , Tetanus, Syphilis , Plague , G...

Which type of cast iron  is brittle in nature and not suitable for used in marine work ? 4. What is % carbon range for steel and % cast iron? 5. What is the significance of iron carbide diagram ?

Pump part 1

1. What is a pump ? What are its applications ? Ans. Pump is a device which adds energy to the fluid which is used transfer fluids from one place to another . It is used to transfer sea water , fresh water , fuel such as diesel , hfo , lubricating oil, hydraulic oil which is essential for auxiliary purposes. 2. What is the classification of pump? Ans. There are two types of pumps .          A. Positive displacement pump          B. Rotodynamic pump. 3. What is the difference between these two pumps? Ans.                  Postive Displacement Pump A. Displacement of fluid is achieved by mechanical variation in the volume . B. Capableof  handling with small quantity of fluid with  high pressure . C.Energy addition is periodic. D. Self priming pump. E. Displacement of fluid will results in increase in pr...

Surface Tension

Surface tension It is the force of attraction(cohension) between the similar surface particles of fluid which forms films . Reasons : various forces such as vanderwaal forces , hydrogen bonding forms web of water molecules on the surface. Concept : At liquid–air interfaces, surface tension results from the greater attraction of liquid molecules to each other (due to  cohesion ) than to the molecules in the air (due to  adhesion ). The net effect is an inward force at its surface that causes the liquid to behave as if its surface were covered with a stretched elastic membrane.  Eg . A. Ants and other spinder walk through surface of water.        B. Rain drop has a  shape Additional Information : Its dimension is same as that of force per unit length Water has surface tension of 72.8 milli newtons at 20 degree centigrade

Crankshaft types

CRANKSHAFT TYPES : Crankshaft can be of four types :- a. Fully built crankshaft:- Various parts  of this crankshaft is shrink fitted . b. Semi-built crankshaft:- Various parts such as crank throw and pin are of single piece case. c. Welded crankshaft:- webs , crankpin and half journals are welded together. d. Flanged coupling crankshaft:- these are of two pieces and joined together by flanged coupling . Source : scribd.com

Indicator card

What is indicator card ? And why it is taken . It is the diagram which is pressure between the relative position of piston in the cylinder i.e volume . It is  taken to 1. Calculate the indicated power of an engine. 2. Examine the scavenging and exhaust process. 3. To find out the peak pressure and compression pressure . 4. To examine the combustion process inside the cylinder .

Mechanical Governor vs Electrical Governor

Mechanical Governor 1. It uses flyweight to determine the engine speed . Electrical Governor 1. It uses magnetic pick - up coil to determine the engine speed . Mechanical Governor 2. Vertical spindle is connected through flyweight which transmits the actuating signal to hydraulic unit to operate the fuel control lever . Electrical Governor 2. It uses rectified dc voltage signal to actuate the hydraulic unit to operate the fuel control lever .
