Legionella Bacteria

A type of pneumonia can be lead to fatal due to the presence of bacteria present in large air conditioning plant of ships , building etc.

How this bacteria breed and reason for its growth

These bacteria basically breed in stagnant water or wet deposits of sludge and slime.

Possible areas in the plant where they can be found

Air inlet area below the cooler (stagnant water)

In the Air filter

In the humidifiers of water spray type

In the damaged insulation

Guidelines to the problem

Sterilization is the technique used for cleaning these bacteria .

50 ppm super chlorinated solution is used as sterilization agent for the cleaning of the filters , drains of coolers , humifiers etc.

Note

Regular inspection should be carried out and sterilization should be done within three months of cooler.

While humidifier of water spray type should be regularly cleaned .

Difference between Attemperator and De-superheater

Attemperator are fitted in order to keep the steam temperature in the final stages of the superheater within certain desired limits . This is done for two main reasons . 1. The most important is the protection of the superheater tube material from the effects of overheating. *Mild steel superheater tubes tubes should not be subjected to steam temperatures in excess of 455℃. 2. The formation of bonded deposits on superheater tubes can be reduced if steam and gas streams within certain temperature ranges are prevented from coming into contact of each other.
