Watch keeping Round ( From Tunnel to funnel )

During Round

1. Check the funnel smoke and judge it as given below
  a. If it is whitish means air is more than required and more water content in the fuel .
b. If it is blackish means combustion is not proper,  more fuel is present than required .
c. If it is transparent greyish means combustion is taking place properly .
Note. One should must identify the funnel of boiler , auxiliary engine and main engine .

2. Check the economiser platform for feed water , steam and smoke .

3. Check steering platform for hydraulic oil level .

4. Check the boiler  for water level if blow through is required for correct water level it should be done .

5. Check the boiler for flame through the sight glass .

6. Check the positions of portable fire extinguishers.

7. Check the level of crankcase lube oil sump .

8. Check the pump and purifier motor running amps.

9. Check the bilge level at the bottom platform .

10. Identify the maintenance work and risk involved in it . And identify the isolated system .

11. Check the air compressor amps and drain the air bottles .

12. OWS should be tested and monitored.

13. ECR chief engineer standing order should be listened .

14. Ensure  any leakages  of the system . Check the level in the expansion tank .

15. Check stern tube lube oil pressure and sump .

16. Check the high and low sea suction on port and stbd side.

16. All the parameters of machinery should be recorded.

Will add more from my ships checklist .

Wire drawing effect

Wire drawing effect : It is erosion or scoring of valve seat and disc material of the valve . Causes : 1. Due to differential pressure across the valve . 2. Thermal and mechanical damages . Effects : Valve is unable to isolate the line and fails in sealing . Gas and liquid will leak from the wire and scratch like groove .

Difference between Attemperator and De-superheater

Attemperator are fitted in order to keep the steam temperature in the final stages of the superheater within certain desired limits . This is done for two main reasons . 1. The most important is the protection of the superheater tube material from the effects of overheating. *Mild steel superheater tubes tubes should not be subjected to steam temperatures in excess of 455℃. 2. The formation of bonded deposits on superheater tubes can be reduced if steam and gas streams within certain temperature ranges are prevented from coming into contact of each other. De-Superheater is used to reduce the temperature of a quantity of superheated steam and make it suitable for used in auxiliary services requires low temperature or saturated steam . *The reason for doing this way rather than by taking the saturated steam direct from steam drum , is to protect the superheater , these must be protected against overheating under all conditions of load by circulating steam through them . *Al...
