REGULATION FOR THE DISCHARGE OF SEWAGE ONBOARD SHIP

Regulation for the Discharge of Sewage 
  • According to Marpol (73/78) annex IV  , prevention of pollution from sewage it has 11 regulation according to Marpol consolidation 2002.
  • Regulation 1 deals with basic definition of new ship, existing ship , sewage , nearest land etc.
  • Regulation 2 deals with application of this convention on different types of ship based on their tonnage and number of crew capacity.
  • Regulation 3 deals with various types of surveys which is conducted initially from the ship construction to operational level.
  • Regulation 4 deals with the  issuing of ISPP (International Sewage Pollution Prevention ) certificate.
  • Regulation 5 deals with issuing of certificate by another government i.e, there is no issue of ISPP certificate to flag which is not the party of organisation .
  • Regulation 6 deals with the forms of certificate i.e ISPP certificate shall be drawn in official language of issuing country if the issuing country official language is neither English nor French then text should include a translation into one of these language.
  • Regulation 7 deals with the duration of the certificate , renewable should be done in less than 5 years and the certificate will be cease if the ship's flag transfer.

  • Regulation 8 deals with discharge of sewage  
    • 1 a. The ship should discharge disinfected and comminuted sewage using a system approved by administration in accordance with regulation at a distance more than 4 nautical miles from the nearest land. If the sewage is neither comminuted nor disinfected sewage should be discharge 12 nautical miles away from the land. During the time ship should be enroute and the discharge should not be instantaneous . There should be a moderate discharge as per system verified by the administration and ship should not be less than 4 knots from the nearest land
    • 1 b. Ship should have operational sewage treatment plant  
    • 1.b.1 Test results of the plant should be laid down in the ISPP certificate 
    •  1.b.2 Effluents shall not produce visible floating solids nor discolouring of surrounding        water.
    •   1. c. when sewage is mixed with different wastes or water having different discharge         requirement. In this case more stringent requirement shall apply .
    • Regulation 9 deals with the exception , in case of securing the ship, safety of life at sea , sewage can be discharge or in the case of damage to the ship hull or equipment damage if at all the precautions have taken care before and after of incident.
    • Regulation 10 deals with the reception facilities means government of each party should have facilities at ports and terminals for the reception of the sewage without causing delay to the ships.
    • Regulation 11 deals with the standard discharge connections means both the pipelines should have same flange as given below in the table.

In Fwg distilled water is generated still it is not directly used in Boiler without chemical dosing even it is free from contaminants . The reason to the question is distilled water ready absorption carbon dioxide and tends to become slightly acidic which can cause corrosion . 2.
