BOILER WATER TEST
PURPOSE OF BOILER WATER TEST
To maintain boiler is in good condition and prevent it from any damages due to acidic corrosion , scale formation etc.
To control the chemical feed to the boiler i.e the quantity of chemicals to be added .
WHAT ARE ALL THE TEST TO BE CARRIED OUT
1. Alkalinity Test
2. Chloride Test
3. Phosphate Test
4. pH test
5. Conductive test
How sampling is done and which is the sampling point ?
Sampling should be done from the same point where it was taken previous .
In general consideration, sampling point is SALINOMETER cock .
Always ensure that air should not be trapped inside the sampling bottle because it will affect the tets result , to do this overflow the bottle .
WHAT IS ALKALINITY TEST ? AND HOW IT IS CALCULATED ?
Alkalinity test is carried out to find out the presence and quantity of calcium carbonates in boiler feed water .
There are two tests which we carried out for alkalinity.
1. Phenolphthalein test
It is used to find out the presence of hydroxides and carbonates . Its presence can be find out prior and to safe the boiler from caustic embrittlement .
Procedure
a. Take the sample in test tube of 100ml prior rinsed it through the sample water .
b. Add the p alkalinity tablet and shake it well .
c. If p alkalinity is present it will turn to blue .
d. Add the tablet one after another and shake it well untill the test sample turns to yellow .
e. Count the number of tablets added to it .
f. calculation of ppm of CaCO3 = 20(no. of tablet) - 10
g. Record the value and write out in the log sheet .
2. M Alkalinity test
It is carried out to find out the quantity of Bicarbonates present in the boiler feed water , to protect the boiler from acidic corrosion due to formation of carbonic acid inside the boiler .
Procedure
a. Take the sample in test tube of 100 ml prior rinsed it trough the same sample water .
b. Add the M alkalinity tablet and shake it well.
c. If bicarbonates is present it will turn into pink/red .
d. Count the no. of tablets and calculalte it through the formula
as above of phenolphthalein test.
WHAT IS CHLORIDE TEST AND HOW CHLORIDES CONTENTS ARE CALCULATED ?
To find out the quantity of salt present in the boiler feed water chlorides test is carried out .
Chemically , tablets are available while there is a salinometer can also be use to find out the ppm of chlorides present.
As we know that salinity is proportional to conductivity , this principle is used in salinometer .
while in case of chemical process we are adding tablets of chlorides to find out the chlorides contents
in ppm .
formula is based on the test sample
For 50ml test tube
20 (No. of tablets) - 20
For 100ml test tube
10(No. of tablets)-10
Note
The information of chloride content in the feed water system helps us the do either scum blowdown or bottom blowdown.
Additional Information
IN GENERAL THE PPM OF CHLORIDES MAINTAINED IS = 10 ppm .
WHAT IS PHOSPHATE TEST , WHAT IS ITS SIGNIFICANCE AND THE PROCEDURE OF DOING SO ?
To find out the Phosphate content in boiler feed water , phosphate test is carried out . A minimum Phosphate level is maintained so that there will be neutralization of acid , prevent scale formation .
Too much phosphate may cause priming and foaming.
WHAT IS pH TEST , WHAT IS ITS SIGNIFICANCE AND THE PROCEDURE OF DOING SO ?
Normal pH maintained inside the Boiler is in between 7.5 to 14 .
